Cast Acrylic, Graphite, Oil & Spray Paint

This diptych off sets a side of thick zinc white with an area of scratched lines that have had graphite powder rubbed into the surface that look a lot like thin pencil lines. The result is a beautiful balance of two surfaces made of different materials and with different processes that appear to be the optical opposite of each other.
Cast Acrylic, Oil & Spray Paint
101 x 115 cm
This work consists of a panel of horizontally brushed black oil paint on top of a sheet of polished acrylic that has been scratched hundreds of times in a vertical direction creating the simultaneous appearance of brushwork and delicate shadows that flicker across the surface. The black section floats on a haze of red colour and the lower white one radiates a bright yellow.
Cast acrylic, aluminium, oil & spray paint
80 x 90 cm
The works in the Interface series are hard-edged minimalist paintings that explore ideas of brushwork and surface texture. I am trying to create works that juxtapose conventionally applied oil paint with diverse materials and specific processes that mimic brushwork, in effect a kind of abstract tromp l’oeil.
This painting is for the most part concerned with the relationships between the four different sections and their surfaces. One is scratched repetitively another is painted with oil paint, while the other two are polished and sanded respectively. The combination is four monochromes arranged in perfect balance.
Cast Acrylic, Plywood, Acrylic & Spray Paint
106 x 100 cm
Here I have added a stained section of naturally patterned plywood to off set the rigid repetition of scratched acrylic panel, where its more fluid surface and bright colour manages to reduce the hard edge and overtly minimalist feeling and add an element of chance to the painting.
